Who will be the Swarm's third head coach?

July 11, 2006

I have looked up some information on four possible and rumored head coaches to take over my favorite and your favorite team, the Minnesota Swarm. All four seem to have very impressive backgrounds and would do well with the Swarm.

If any information is incorrect, please correct me.

Troy Cordingley

Born January 9th, 1967

  • Assistant Head Coach - Defense- Buffalo Bandits since 2003
  • Head Coach - Brampton Excelsiors since 2005
  • Head Coach - Brooklin Redmen 2002 - 2004

Played in the NLL for the following

  • Buffalo Bandits 1993 - 1999
  • Albany Attack 2000 - 2001
  • Rochester Knighthawks 2001

NLL career including playoffs (143g, 202a)
Won two NLL championships with Buffalo in 1993 & 1996.
Won four Mann Cups as a player:

  • Brampton Excelsiors 1992, 1993
  • Six Nations Chiefs 1995, 1996

Career Stats (440g 711a)

Coached the top defense in the NLL in 2006 for Buffalo which only gave up 167 goals (10.4 per game). His name always seems to come up for new head coach jobs in the NLL. Maybe this will be his chance. Troy’s Brampton Excelsiors are 9-3-2 and in second place in the MSL.

Duane “Dewey” Jacobs

Born March 22nd, 1966

  • Assistant Head Coach - Offense - Buffalo Bandits since 2005
  • Head Coach - Six Nations Chiefs since 2004

Played in the NLL for the following:

  • Detroit Turbos 1993 - 1994
  • Rochester Knighthawks 1995 - 2002
  • Buffalo Bandits 2003

NLL career including playoffs (181g 186a)
Won NLL championship with Rochester in 1997.
2nd Team NLL All-Star 1996 - 1999
Won Mann Cup three times with Six Nations 1994 - 1996
Career Stats (346g 430a)

Duane is a lawyer who either is in the process or has got his law degree at the University of Windsor.

Coaches five Swarm players (Brock Boyle, Riley Kemp, Eric Pacey, Jamie Taylor and Dean Hill) this summer. Only Boyle was with Six Nations last year. Kemp was with Victoria last summer but made the move east this summer. Taylor came back to Ontario after a year at Nanaimo. Pacey didn’t play last summer. Hill was drafted by Six Nations I believe. Either it was the appeal to play with Brock Boyle, which is undeniable and/or Jacobs is Marty O’Neill’s guy and Marty wanted him to get acquainted with some of the Swarm. Duane’s Six Nations Chiefs are bringing up the rear in the MSL with a 3-12 record which is to put it bluntly, not too kosher.

Paul St. John

Born April 21st, 1964

  • Assistant Head Coach - Defense -Minnesota Swarm since 2006
  • Head Coach and General Manager - Ajax-Pickering Rock since 2003
  • Head Coach - Brooklin Merchants 2002

Did not play in the NLL

Won Minto Cup (Junior A Championship in Canada) in 1984 & 1985 with the Whitby Warriors
Won Mann Cup four times:

  • Brooklin Redmen 1987, 1990
  • Brampton Excelsiors 1993
  • Six Nations Chiefs 1994

Career Summer Stats (182g 297a)

Paul is very familiar with Marty O’Neill system in Minnesota. His coaching of the defense was an integral part of the Swarm’s entrance into the playoffs in their second year of existence. His Ajax-Pickering Rock just won the regular season title in the OLA Sr. B league with a 10-3-1 record. Personally, my favorite go get the top honors.

Terry Sanderson

Born August 22nd, 1952

  • Head Coach - Toronto Rock 2004-2006
  • Head Coach - Ottawa Rebel 2003
  • Head Coach - Montreal Express 2002
  • Head Coach - Albany Attack 1999 -2001
  • Assistant Head Coach - Brampton Excelsiors 2006

Career record 73-62
Won NLL Championship with Toronto Rock in 2005

Never played in the NLL

Career Summer Stats (350g 379a)

Josh Sanderson of the Toronto Rock is the son of Terry. Wishful thinking on my part if father could bring his son along. Sanderson is the only one of the four to be a head coach in the NLL. Of course, with a Champions Cup under his belt, Sanderson has more than enough experience to take over in Minnesota. If hired as head coach, I am sure some Swarm fans will remind him of the come from behind 10-9 Swarm victory over the Rock on April 1st, 2006. In that game at the Xcel Energy Center, the Swarm scored seven straight goals (including Mark Miyashita’s game winner) to get their first ever win against the Rock .
