The Swarm Acquire O'Connor and pick from the Rock for Sorensen

August 20, 2014

Your and mine favorite local professional indoor lacrosse team, the Minnesota Swarm, continue with their whirlwind of trades this offseason. This time they deal with the Toronto Rock:

The Minnesota Swarm get:

The Toronto Rock get:

The Swarm acquire right handed transition player Ethan O'Connor who just finished his first NLL season in 2014 with the Toronto Rock. O'Connor was selected in the first round with the #9 pick in the 2013 NLL Entry Draft. In his rookie season, O'Connor scored five goals and four assists, scooped 133 loose balls to lead all NLL rookies and forced fifteen turnovers in seventeen games. He played collegiately at Hobart and won the 2010 Founders Cup with the Halton Hills Bulldogs. He also played junior lacrosse with the Burlington Chiefs. The Milton, Ontario native played this summer for the Oakville Rock along with Alex Crepinsek, Jason Noble and Jordan MacIntosh.

Look for O'Connor to wear #37 like he did in Toronto and with Oakville this summer. However, he did wear #13 at Hobart and in his junior career with Burlington. O'Connor is currently signed for the upcoming season as he signed a contract with the Rock on August 14, 2014 for one year. O'Connor can take faceoffs along with MacIntosh and Andrew Suitor as he won 48 of 113.

The Swarm also picked up Toronto's first round pick in the 2017 NLL Entry Draft. They now have three first rounders in that draft with their own, Toronto's and Connecticut's (formerly Philadelphia) when they traded Evan Kirk in September 2013.

Of course to get a player like O'Connor, the Swarm had to give up a fantastic player in Brock Sorensen. According to Swarm Owner and General Manager John Arlotta, Brock's job back home would conflict with his availability to play for the Swarm in 2015 and it looks like Arlotta did a pretty good job in replacing Sorensen. Sorensen was the second pick overall in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft and played all 34 regular and 2 playoff games for the Swarm from 2013 - 2014. Overall, Sorensen aka "Brock the Rock" had twelve goals and eight assists, scooped 124 loose balls and forced 27 turnovers. He will bring his popular behind the back breakaway shot to the Rock and join his former Swarm teammate Jeff Gilbert, who signed last week with the Rock as an unrestricted free agent.
