Anderson can play forward or transition and be effective wherever he finds himself on the floor. He isn't always a big scorer, but he is gritty and smart. The six goals he put up for Cobourg in a recent MSL game, though, were testament to that fact that he is a dangerous offensive threat with the ball in his stick. Thanks to his dual heritage, Anderson represented both Canada and Iroquois at consecutive World Junior Championships. He led the latter with 21 points (9G, 12A) in four games as the Iroquois won a silver medal in 2019, when he was just 18 years old. Well, Collison is a 6-4 lefty who scored 28 regular season goals in 2022 as a 19-year-old and added another dozen goals in the playoffs. Then this year he rejoined the Beaches half-a-dozen games into the season and still managed to score 51 goals in just 14 games, an average of 3.6 per game. How is that not intriguing for NLL teams? Especially when his fellow Beaches lefty Willem Firth also played 14 games and he put up 55 goals? He's a long shot—circumstantially, given that he has had limited opportunities to play box lacrosse so far, and geographically, because he is from Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia. If he were to come to Canada and play for a couple of years, he could dramatically increase his chances of being the first Aussie to make his mark in the pro game since Gordon Purdie. Elkins led Australia at the 2022 World Juniors with eight goals and 14 points as a 17-year-old. He can play at either end of the floor. And at 17 he was 6-1 and 205 pounds, with quick feet, slick hands and a good outside shot. That's why the Coquitlam Adanacs acquired him for their playoff run. The move has paid off for them in a big way. In Coquitlam's eight playoff games, Malawsky was tied for the team lead in goals (16) and was second in points (28). He also led Langley in goals and was second in scoring for the Thunder despite playing just 11 games for them before being traded. With the Northmen putting up an undefeated regular season (and still yet to lose in the playoffs as of this publication), the love has rightly been spread around the Orangeville roster. Chris Origlieri has had a spectacular season in net. Joey Spallina has stepped into box lacrosse and done his best Tom Schreiber quick-study impression. Trey Deere has dazzled with his blend of skill, grit and respect (see: playing a game with a wooden stick to honor Alfie Jacques). But with his 112 points, Marquis became the highest-scoring Northman since Josh Sanderson in 1998 and the first to crack the century mark since Daryl Veltman in 2005. McLeod is a ridiculous athlete, skilled and creative. He was seventh in the OJ in assists with 50 this year. I predict that if he plays 20 games again, McLeod will top that number but also explode in goal-scoring, blowing past the 31 he had this year and likely nearing or topping 50. His tantalizing potential as a pro, though, was really on display for Canada at the 2022 World Juniors. He scored seven goals in each of Canada's first three games. The craziest part was that he used his dynamic athleticism to score all seven right on or in the air above the crease in one game, then when the D in the next game on Richmond's inside game, he buried a string of outside shots. He's blazing fast, has solid stick skills and approaches the game with a sound Orangeville defense-first philosophy, for the most part. What a wonderfully symmetrical season Ruff had: 7G and 7A; 1PPG, 1PPA, 1SHG, 1SHAt, and one penalty. The symmetry is just a cool side note, though. The real story is how good Ruff is overall. He isn't huge but he doesn't seem to get overmatched by bigger players often. That was largely just from his talent; he still had a bit of a baby-deer-on-ice look in those games. Well, any awkwardness didn't last long. Spallina showed that his lacrosse IQ is comparable to his phenomenal skill. You just don't look at him on the floor and think ‘field player’ anymore; he is simply a great box lacrosse player playing a key role on one of the best Jr A teams ever. See the Marquis note: four Northmen in the past quarter century have scored 100-plus points in a season. The other three are Marquis, Josh Sanderson and Daryl Veltman. That is incredible company for a guy playing his first full year of box. Two of those came this year—Willem Firth and Finn Thomson. The previous eight will probably sound familiar to lacrosse fans: Colin Doyle, Gavin Prout, Shawn Evans, Joel Tayler [Joel Matthews at the time], Dhane Smith, Reilly O'Connor, Austin Shanks, Jeff Teat. O'Connor and Teat each eclipsed 100 three years in a row. Of all those players, only Teat scored more in a two-season span than Thomson's 254 for '22/'23. He was excellent for the Warriors this summer. And he looked smart, solid and comfortable playing a handful of games with MSL's Brooklin LC this season. He looked so solid that I had to double check that it was the same Warriors player who had been called up and was playing with and against the men. White is becoming effective at using his size (6-4, 224) and strength without racking up damaging penalty minute totals.
