The two teams did not play each other in the regular season last year. They did meet in the East Division Finals as the Knighthawks hosted the Swarm on May 4, 2013. The Swarm held a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter but after a Matt Gibson goal was disallowed that would have extended the Swarm lead to three, the Knighthawks rallied on the strength of two Craig Point goals to win 12-10. The Knighthawks advanced to the Champions Cup where they beat the Washington Stealth, 11-10, to win their second straight cup.

The Swarm open their tenth anniversary season in Rochester just as they did in their inaugural 2005 season. Craig Conn and Jon Harasym each scored three goals to give the Swarm their first ever victory in team history by a score of 12-11

  • The Swarm beat the Knighthawks in the pre-season by a 16-15 score as Scott Jones got the game winner with 1.3 seconds left. Jones apparently rankled the Knighthawks with his goal celebration according to this twitter post.
  • The Swarm finished the pre-season 2-1 while the Knighthawks were 1-2
  • Jason Noble was handed an one-game suspension by the NLL on Thursday night, December 26th, for an illegal cross check which a match penalty was assessed for in December 14th's pre-season game against Calgary. It is not yet known if Noble has or will appeal the suspension.
  • Andrew Suitor is back on the active roster for the Swarm and will be playing for the first time in a regular season game since February 22, 2013 in Edmonton
  • Mike Hobbins was acquired by the Swarm on December 16th to bolster the defense. He has played seven seasons in the NLL, the last five with the Toronto Rock. Dan Ball may have been the cut to make room for Hobbins on the roster. Head Coach Joe Sullivan definitely lobbied John Arlotta to add Hobbins after the Rock released him.
  • Jordan MacIntosh and Jeff Gilbert have played in 36 consecutive games for the Swarm which is the current high for consecutive games played by a Swarm player.
  • Expected starting goaltenders: Swarm - Tyler Carlson /// Knighthawks - Matt Vinc
  • In the pre-season game, Carlson did not play and Vinc played the first half
  • Faceoffs: Swarm - Jordan MacIntosh, Suitor, Jason Noble /// Knighthawks - Craig Point, Tyler Burton
  • The Swarm return 14 players from last year. They have five rookies with Logan Schuss, Noble, Cameron Flint, Jones and Jordan Houtby. Hobbins is the only new player with NLL experience. Backup goaltender Zach Higgins was on the active roster last year but has not yet played a NLL game.
  • The Knighthawks return 18 players from last years Champions Cup winners. Mike Thompson and Mac Allen are new to the team but neither played last year but do have NLL experience. No rookies made the final 20 man roster.
  • The Swarm have not a won a regular season opener since 2009.

Prediction: Minnesota Swarm 12 Rochester Knighthawks 11
