Last year, the two teams played each other three times with the Rock sweeping the season series. The first game last year was in Toronto in February and the Rock won 14-12 even with Jordan MacIntosh getting five goals. The other two games were at The Hive with the first in March with Colin Doyle getting the game winner in overtime in a 9-8 victory for the Rock. Doyle is missing the entire 2015 season due to injury. The third and last match up last season was the season finale for both teams played at The Hive which the Rock held on to win 8-6. Zach Higgins had a career night in that game saving 53 of 61 shots on net. The Rock have won three straight in the series.
Both teams have a home and home this weekend with the second game in Toronto on Saturday night. This weekend is the only time that both teams play each other this regular season. A Swarm sweep this weekend will put the Swarm in first place in the East after this weekend and of course the season series win over the Rock. If the Swarm lose both this weekend, they could possibly end up in last place at the end of this weekend depending on other games in the league.
Last Weekend:
The Swarm had a very good weekend last weekend as they got their first victory this season at home with a 7-6 overtime victory over the Rochester Knighthawks. Callum Crawford scored the game winner 2:21 into overtime. Logan Schuss had three goals and an assist while Zach Higgins saved 34 of 40 shots on net.
The Rock had last weekend off. The last game was a 12-11 victory at home over the Calgary Roughnecks on January 31st. Josh Sanderson got the game winner with 1:44 left in the game and Brandon Miller saved 46 of 57 shots on net.
Notes:
- This weekend is the fourth and fifth games of five straight games against East Division foes. So far, the Swarm are 2-1 in this stretch of games.
- Shayne Jackson limped off the floor in overtime and did not partake in the victory lap at the end of the game. Not sure how serious the injury but it is something to keep an eye on. I would expect Jackson to play and he has not yet missed a game in his NLL and Swarm career
- The August trade this off season between both teams has been good for both teams. The Swarm got Ethan O'Connor who has done well on transition this season with a goal and two assists while Brock Sorensen has given the Rock defense a size injection to go along with three goals and two assists. Both Sorensen and Jeff Gilbert make their first trip to The Hive after leaving the Swarm this offseason.
- Talking to Zach Higgins last Friday night, he had not yet been informed if both goaltenders will see a start this weekend in the home and home series. I see Higgins getting the start this Friday night at home and Brodie MacDonald very possibly starting in Toronto on Saturday night.
- David Earl is not eligible to come off injured reserve until after this weekend
- Callum Crawford is eighth in the NLL with 30 points and seventh in NLL with 19 assists
- Shayne Jackson is tenth in the NLL with 12 goals
- Jordan MacIntosh is second in the NLL with 55 loose balls
- Andrew Suitor is seventh in the NLL with 8 forced turnovers
- Former Rock with the Swarm: Ethan O'Connor
- Former Swarm with the Rock: Kasey Beirnes, Kevin Ross, Brock Sorensen & Jeff Gilbert
- Toronto comes into the weekend with a league best 4-1 record and their only loss was by a 8-6 loss in Rochester.
- Before the season, Garrett Billings was projected to make his comeback from his knee injury that ended his 2014 season prematurely, this weekend against the Swarm. In just 15 games last year, Billings had 32 goals and 69 assists which put him third in the NLL in points.
- Josh Sanderson leads the NLL with 29 assists and is fourth in the NLL with 34 points
- Rob Hellyer is seventh in the NLL with 31 points, fourth in the NLL with 13 goals & ninth in the NLL with 18 assists
- Brodie Merrill is sixth in the NLL with 39 loose balls followed by Jesse Gamble at seventh with 38 loose balls
- Scott Johnston who was 40 of 72 on faceoffs this season is on injured reserve and will not play this weekend.
Prediction: Minnesota Swarm 11 Toronto Rock 10
The beginning of this weekend home and home series between the Minnesota Swarm and Toronto Rock begins this Friday, February 13th at 7:30 pm at Ho-Chunk Nation Field at The Hive. The two games are the only times both teams meet this regular season making this a hugely pivotal point of the season. The Minnesota Swarm are coming off a great win last win over Rochester and with a hot goaltender in Zach Higgins, a pressure defense that antagonizes the opponent all over the floor and an offense with the ability to rip goals in bunches which makes the Swarm ready to defeat the first place Rock.
