Game Notes

A game where most everything went well for the Stealth while most everything went wrong for the Swarm. With the team's leading scorer, Callum Crawford, out with an injury, Brodie MacDoanld with his wife in labor and Corbyn Tao looking out of place on the bench in goaltending equipment, it felt that the Swarm were behind before the game even started. They fell even further behind quickly into the game down 7-3 after the first quarter and never got within three goals the rest of the way. It got so bad that even Tyler Richards, the Stealth goaltender, scored on an empty netter. The defense really needed a big game to help out Zach Higgins but they just couldn't find a way to stop the rejuvenated Stealth who have won 3 of their last 4 games. Logan Schuss had three goals and five assists and Shane MacDonald had his first NLL hat trick to go along with an assist. Andrew Suitor, Shayne Jackson and Jordan MacIntosh had two goals with Miles Thompson, Kiel Matisz and Dean Hill getting one each. The Swarm are now a game out of the playoffs and have a week off to regroup before they return to Ho-Chunk Nation Field to host the New England Black Wolves on Saturday, March 14th.

  • The Swarm must have known that Brodie MacDonald's family was expecting a new child around this time. It is just bad planning by John Arlotta and Joe Sullivan to not have a backup plan for such a case. Considering they were playing in Vancouver, they easily could have found a goaltender to have on the practice roster as insurance for this weekend. That player could have easily driven to Langley, a Vancouver suburb, with gear ready on gameday in case Brodie was going to be unavailable. They knew at least an half hour before the game started that he would not be able to play. They surely could have made a change very easily in this era of instant communication. Like I said, the Vancouver area has a lot of experienced goaltenders that could have been brought in including former Swarm goaltender Nick Patterson. Even assistant head coach Rory McDade could have contacted Dan Lewis, who has NLL experience in Colorado and plays for McDade in the summer in Burnaby.

Instead, the Swarm don't plan properly and dress Corbyn Tao in goaltending gear with no intention of playing him no matter what happened to Zach Higgins. If a backup like Patterson was brought in, they could have given Higgins a break at the very least to stop the bleeding somewhat or maybe even turned the game around with a memorable effort. Also, it would have allowed Tao to play on offense where he does a lot of dirty work to clear space for others. This loss can be squarely blamed on Arlotta and Sullivan for just piss poor planning which supposedly is something both pride themselves on.

  • Logan Schuss is starting to hit the stride all Swarm fans expect to see from him as he has had three hat tricks in his last four games and tonight's eight point performance (3g 5a) is the most points he has had in a game in his NLL career. He also past the 100 point mark in his regular season career last night and now has 101 points.
  • Dean Hill reached 100 points in his Swarm regular season career and now has 102 points.
  • The Swarm had their best power play performance of the year going 5 of 6 but they did give up their league leading eight shorthanded goal. Also, the penalty kill only stopped two of the Stealth's six chances.
  • This is the second time the Swarm have given up at least 20 goals this season. They have lost this season by 7, 3, 12, 5 & 6 goals each or by an average of 5.6 goals per game.
  • Ian Crawford, Callum's brother, played in his first NLL and Swarm game as he scooped up a loose ball and served a two-minute minor. However, no brothers have yet to play in the same game for the Swarm in their history.
  • The Swarm have lost three straight and four of their last five games. The only game they won in that time, they only scored seven goals in that game.
  • All four games this weekend in the NLL were interdivision games ie. East vs. West. The Swarm were the only East team to lose this weekend which makes the Stealth the only West team to win.
  • Tyler Richards is the first goaltender to score a goal against the Swarm in their team history. He is first goaltender to score in a game since 2009 when Matt King of Calgary scored against the Stealth in their last ever game in San Jose.
  • The Stealth tied their team record for goals in a game set back in 2003 when they were originally known as the Albany Attack.
  • The Swarm have never beaten the Stealth in Vancouver in their two games since the team moved to Vancouver to begin the 2014 season. Vancouver has never played in Minnesota and unless they meet in the 2015 Champions Cup, it won't happen until 2016 at the earliest.
