August 2005 Updates

July 2005 | Current Month | Other Months | September 2005

  • 08/30/05 - Minnesota Swarm Roster After the Draft

  • 08/29/05 - Heavenor is Top Pick For Swarm on Draft Day

The Minnesota Swarm started the draft off with Nolan Heavenor at pick #17. He plays summer ball for the the Victoria Shamrocks like many Swarm do. He was a projected late 1st Rounder, but fell to the middle of the second round. With Victoria, he had 12 goals and 16 assists in 2005 regular season and 7 goals and 5 assists so far in the playoffs on a team with immense offensive talent. He attended college at Division II Limestone.

The Swarm had pick #23 in the third round but traded it to Toronto for a 3rd Rounder in '06 and forward Ryan Painter who was on the IR in '05. Played with Ottawa in 2002 & 2003 and the Rock in '04. According to his stats, he had a very good year in '02. I guess we will see.

The Swarm had back to back 4th Round picks at #37 & 38 and took Nate Andres and Tyler Perry both from the Whitby Warriors of the OLA jr A league. Andres, a defender, had 9 goals and 8 assists. Perry, a forward, lead the team with 35 goals and 32 assists.

In the 5th Round at pick #48, the Swarm selected forward Dean Hill of the St. Catherines Spartan Warriors Jr. B. Hill had 41 goals and 39 assists in 20 games for Spartan.

The Swarm's final pick was in the 6th Round at #59 where they took defender Mike Leong of the Surrey Stickmen British Columbia Jr. A. This year he had 3 goal and 4 assists.

  • 08/28/05 - Minnesota Swarm at the 2005 Minnesota State Fair

This weekend the Minnesota Swarm were at the Minnesota State Fair. I visited on Saturday and met Assistant Head Coach Derek Moffat and players Jon Sullivan and Eric Pacey. Read about it at the link above.

  • 08/24/05 - Swarm Acquire Talbot from Sting for Murray

The Minnesota Swarm acquired defenseman Noah Talbot from the Arizona Sting for fellow defender Bruce Murray. Talbot played his first year of NLL ball with the Sting in 2005 where he scored two goals and four assists. He spent the 2004 season on the Anaheim Storm practice roster before eventually landing in Arizona after he was taken in last December's Vancouver Ravens Dispersal Draft. Right now, Talbot is playing summer ball for the Victoria Shamrocks in a pursuit for his first Mann Cup. Murray was taken by the Swarm in the Anaheim Storm Dispersal Draft last month but probably prefers to stay in the West Division.

  • 08/17/05 - Mike Simpson Resigns; Adam Mueller Promoted

The Mike Simpson era of Minnesota Swarm Lacrosse is over after just one year. Today, Simpson resigned as Head Coach after leading the Swarm to a 5-11 inaugural season with a lot of young and NLL-inexperienced talent. No reason was given for the resignation.

The Swarm have immediately filled the opening by promoting Adam Mueller from assistant to head coach. Mueller was the head coach for the Philadelphia Wings from 2002 - 2004 where he compiled a 23-26 record including a 2002 playoff loss with Swarm General Manager Marty O'Neill as his boss. Maybe a more experienced head coach like Mueller can move the growing process faster than a neophyte with practically zero NLL experience prior to 2005 like Simpson.
