This is the third and final game of the season series between the two teams. Buffalo has won the first two and both were in Buffalo that had
the same theme: fast start for Buffalo, trying to catch up late for Minnesota. The Bandits jumped out to 11-3 lead to win 15-12 on January 30th and
a 9-5 halftime lead on their way to a 12-8 victory on March 21st. With those two victories, the Bandits have won the season series and
the ever important tiebreaker which is just one Bandit win on Saturday night from breaking the Swarm's back.
The Bandits have won six in a row against the Swarm in Buffalo; however, the Swarm may have a ray of hope as they have beaten
the Bandits four straight at The Hive including two 10-9 victories last season.
Last Weekend:
The Swarm played twice last weekend, winning at home and losing on the road. Last Friday, the Swarm led throughout on their way to a 12-8
victory over the New England Black Wolves to win the season series three games to one. Callum Crawford led the Swarm with three goals and four assists.
The following night, the Swarm traveled to Rochester to play the Knighthawks and suffered a humiliating 10-2 defeat. The two goals for the Swarm
are the lowest ever scored in a NLL regular season game and ties it with the 1999 NLL playoff win by the Toronto Rock over the Philadelphia Wings, 13-2. The
season series is tied at one with both teams meeting to end the regular season at The Hive on May 2nd.
The Bandits played on Saturday night at home to the New England Black Wolves losing 12-11. Ryan Benesch had five goals and two assists
to lead the Bandits. The Black Wolves lead the season series over the Bandits 2-0 with two more games left in the series.
Notes:
- Swarm-Rollergirls Doubleheader Night
- The Swarm must win their remaining games and get a lot of help to make the playoffs. Lose this weekend and they are eliminated from
playoff contention.
- April is the best month (and only winning month) at home for the Swarm in team history with a 16-14 record including last week's win over New England.
- The Swarm in five home games this year have averaged nine goals for and twelve goals against.
- Even with the struggles of the offense, the defense continues to give the team a chance. Last weekend, the gave up an average of nine goals per game in the two games
that weekend. Joel White and Ethan O'Connor are getting to the loose balls while Greg Downing and Alex Crepinsek are locking down the other team's top scorers.
- Zach Higgins continues to keep Brodie MacDonald on the bench with his sixth straight game of saving at least 76% of shots on net.
- Kiel Matisz went on second level injured reserve (21 days) on March 21st due to an right arm injury suffered on March 14th against New England. It looks like he would be eligible to be
activated on April 11th for this weekend's game if he is ready to go.
- Both teams are the bottom two in the league in power play percentage by a wide margin as both are under 30% with the league average at 45%. The Swarm are 1 for 20
in their last five games. In the two games between the teams this year, both have went a combined 3 for 12 on the power play and neither scored in five chances in the
game on March 21st.
- Former Swarm with the Bandits: Ryan Benesch, Andrew Watt, Chad Culp and Jay Thorimbert
- Mark Steenhuis was placed on the first level injured reserve (10 days) on April 7th, meaning he will miss this weekend's game. Steenhuis has 24 goals and 43 assists this season but is notorious for racking up the points against the Swarm including the game winner for the Bandits in the Swarm's first ever playoff game in 2006. He has played in all 26 games in the Swarm vs. Bandits series including both playoff games.
- Regular Season: 24GP 44g 50a 94pts 1GWG
- Playoffs: 2GP 2g 2a 4pts 1GWG
- Ryan Benesch leads the NLL with 40 goals this season and is sixth in points with 77
- Dhane Smith is eighth in the NLL with 75 points
- At 46, this could be John Tavares last trip in uniform to The Hive, so get out to see NLL's all-time leading scorer. He has
done quite a bit a damage against the Swarm:
- Regular Season: 21GP 43g 66a 109pts 4GWG
- Playoffs: 2GP 6g 5a 11pts 1GWG
- David Brock will miss the second game of his two game suspension this weekend for an incident in against Toronto on March 13th.
Prediction: Minnesota Swarm 10 Buffalo Bandits 9
The Minnesota Swarm start the first of four straight to the end the regular season with all four at Ho-Chunk Nation Field at The Hive on Saturday night as
they play host to the Buffalo Bandits. Win and continue to dream playoffs, lose and get ready for summer ball. I look for another fine Swarm defensive showing to lead the way and the Swarm offense to rally late for a come from behind victory.
