July 2014 Updates

June 2014 | Current Month | Other Months | August 2014

  • 07/31/14 - Jones Signs Up for Sophomore Season for Swarm

The Minnesota Swarm re-signed 2013 first round pick Scott Jones for one more year. Jones was picked seventh overall in last year's draft out of UMBC and is playing summer ball for Burnaby of the WLA. Last year in his rookie season with the Swarm he played 16 games in which he had six goals and fifteen assists. He scored his first NLL and Swarm game winning goal on February 23, 2014 against Philadelphia.

Jones will be needed to improve his production for the upcoming season. Six goals on eighty shots is a rough road to travel especially for a team that finished last in goals scored in the NLL last season. The Swarm may be thinking that signing Jones for one year gives Jones to prove himself and if not, with four first rounders in a very deep 2015 NLL Entry Draft, the Swarm should be able to find a replacement.

  • 07/30/14 - Turner Comes Back to Minnesota

Yesterday, the Minnesota Swarm made a trade with the Edmonton Rush. The Swarm received F Alex Turner in exchange for their third round pick in the 2015 NLL Entry Draft.

Turner was originally drafted by the San Jose Stealth in 2008. On draft day in 2009, the Stealth traded Turner to the Swarm. The lefty forward played one game with the Swarm in 2010 where he assisted on a goal but spent the rest of the season on the practice squad. He has since played with Philadelphia and Edmonton. Last year in three games, Turner had two goals and an assist. He has been much more successful in the summer in the WLA than he has been in the NLL. He will be battling for time on the left side with Logan Schuss, Shayne Jackson, Josh Gillam and Dane Stevens.

Look for Turner to wear #87.

  • 07/11/14 - The Wings Planning to Relocate

The Philadelphia Wings announced today that they are planning to relocate for the 2015 season. The Wings basically site that the team can not survive financially as is in Philadelphia. Any move would have to be approved by the NLL Board of Governors. If they can't find a new place for 2015, a dispersal draft will be held.

The Wings have been in Philadelphia for 28 years dating back to the the start of the league in 1987. They are the only team that began in 1987 to stay in one city. The Wings won six NLL Championships in 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998 and 2001. The Swarm and Wings played 22 times since the Swarm joined the league in 2005 with the Swarm winning the all-time series 13-9.

  • 07/04/14 - MacIntosh Named to Replace Grant for Canada at World Field Lacrosse Championships

The Canadian Lacrosse Association announced today that John Grant will not be able to play in this year's WFLC that starts on July 10th. He will be replaced by the Swarm's Jordan MacIntosh, who should have been on the team to begin with. It ends up looking like MacIntosh was the last cut to bring the roster to 23 for the Championships but now he will represent his country.

Grant was deemed illegible by the Federation of International Lacrocsse because of a drug that he takes in order to stay healthy after a staph infection he incurred in 2009 is not allowed under FIL rules.
