September 2013 Updates

August 2013 | Current Month | Other Months | October 2013

  • 09/30/13 - Team Canada officials have invited 51 players for their selection camp to determine who will represent their country at the 2014 World Field Lacrosse Championships in Denver, Colorado next July. The selection camp will be held October 11 through 14, 2013 in Buffalo, New York at Canisius College. Eight Swarm players have been selected to attend:

  • 09/30/13 - Andrew Suitor tweeted today that the surgeon who looked at his knee today, said he is on pace to be 100% by training camp. Training camp is expected to start late November probably at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, Ontario.

  • 09/17/13 - Minnesota Swarm Depth Chart After Draft Special

The Minnesota Swarm just concluded the 2013 NLL Entry Draft yesterday in which they drafted ten new players and traded Nik Bilic to the Edmonton Rush. Normally, I just include active roster players but with the new draftees, lets see where they may fit in right.

Generally, I will put the active roster player above the draftee, but there are some exceptions. Injuries concerns for Andrew Suitor (knee), Pat Smith (knee) and Matt Gibson (concussion concerns) have them lower on my chart at this time. The strong rumor is that Jay Card will not play this year, so right now, he is low on the totem pole right now. Earlier in the year, I was told that Sam Bradman would be in this year's camp so he is on the depth chart but until I get more solid and current confirmation, he is at the bottom also. 2013 draftee JJ Laforet is a graduate assistant coach with Marymount University and I am not sure how available he will be for the upcoming season. Jordan MacIntosh and Kiel Matisz generally play out the front door but the Swarm have them listed as transition players at this time.

Even though there is no official announcement, it appears that the active roster will decrease from 23 to 21 players. Practice rosters may expand but that also is not confirmed. All of this is contingent upon the completion of the collective bargaining agreement between the NLL and the PLPA. With the CBA still be negotiated, there is moratorium on player signings, which I assume includes the newly drafted players. Basically, the news in the NLL now is the CBA because nothing else really can go forward without it being resolved.

When, and if, camp starts in late November, training camp should be quite intense with the newly drafted talent looking to put some veterans on the unemployment line.

    The depth chart below includes:

    • The nineteen active roster players (AR)
    • The two practice roster players at the end of last year (PR)
    • The ten 2013 NLL Entry Draft players (2013)
    • The one 2012 NLL Entry Draft player placed on the inactive draft roster (2012)
    • The one player on injured reserve (IR)

  • 09/16/13 - The Minnesota Swarm unveiled new gold jerseys at the NLL Entry Draft

They will be worn on the road and some special appearances per the Swarm on their twitter account and both front and back can be seen here on Jason Noble's instagram account. The white jerseys will be worn at home and the status of the blue jerseys is unclear. The jersey sponsor is Projoy and there is a tenth anniversary patch on the upper right side. Numbers and names are in white with blue piping. The horizontal stripes under the arms, the secondary logo on the front with "MINNESOTA" script and the honeycomb on the shoulders remain from last year's jerseys.

  • 09/16/13 - The Swarm draft ten players at the 2013 NLL Entry Draft at the Toronto Rock Athletic Center in Oakville, Ontario including four first rounders. The team traded D Nik Bilic on draft day to the Edmonton Rush along with the fifth overall and in return they received the fourth pick overall.

  • 09/13/13 - The Swarm made a pre-draft trade today sending goaltender Evan Kirk to the Philadelphia Wings. The Wings did not send the Swarm any players back immediately because the Swarm are into that but they did send the Swarm their first round pick they got from Colorado in 2015 and their own first round pick in 2017.

Kirk was drafted by the Swarm with the 6th overall pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. He did well in his two years with the Swarm as he shared duties with Tyler Carlson, who joined the team with Kirk for the 2012 season. Kirk was the winning goaltender in the Swarm's first ever playoff victory, a 14-10 victory over Colorado on May 5th, 2012. However, by April of the 2013 season, the Swarm seemed to settle on Carlson, who stared and finished the last four regular season games and both playoff games.

With Kirk traded, that leaves Carlson as the clear number one with Zach Higgins as his back up. Ryan Masters may also be brought back to camp for the 2014 season to tryout for the backup spot after spending the entire 2013 season on the practice roster. Also, this may increase the interest the Swarm have in selecting Dillon Ward from Orangeville, Ontario in the first round of the 2013 NLL Entry Draft next Monday. Ward, like Kirk, is definitely thought of as first round material which is rare for a goaltender.

  • 09/13/13 - The National Lacrosse League announced that the Minnesota Swarm will travel to Rochester to play the Knighthawks on December 7th in a preseason game at the Blue Cross Arena. The game starts at 6:00 pm central and the NLL at the same time will hold the NLL Hall of Fame ceremony for this year's inductee, long-time Knighthawk goaltender Pat O'Toole. The game will be on The Lacrosse Network Youtube channel.
