October 2014 Updates

September 2014 | Current Month | Other Months | November 2014

  • 10/31/14 - Miles Thompson Signs for Two Years of Halloween Treats

It's no trick, as the Swarm treated Swarm top draft pick Miles Thompson to a two-year contract. Thompson is expected to immediately step in on the right side of the offense and contribute. Thompson has had a busy year as he won the Tewaaraton Trophy with his brother Lyle for the NCAA Final Eight team, University of Albany. He won a bronze medal with the Iroquois Nationals at the 2014 World Field Lacrosse Championships. He won the Presidents Cup with the Onondaga Redhawks. His Rochester Rattlers made it to the MLL's Steinfeld Cup Finals. He became a representative for Nike and helped start Thompson Brothers Lacrosse with his brothers. At the end of November, he will begin training camp with the Swarm as he starts his NLL career for what Swarm owner and general manager John Arlotta says "for many years to come at The Hive".

  • 10/28/14 - IL Indoor - 2014 ILIndoor Top 50: Jordan MacIntosh, No. 36

  • 10/20/14 - Indian Country Today - Thompson Brothers Sign With Nike

Swarm 2014 First Round Draft Pick Miles Thompson signs a contract along with his brothers Jeremy and Jerome to represent Nike.

  • 10/20/14 - YouTube - THRONE ROOM 5: Jordan MacIntosh's Canada Vital | @UALacrosse @CanadaLacrosse @Minnesota_Swarm

Throne of String does a great job dying the head Jordan MacIntosh will presumably use this season for the Swarm. Then again, it looks too good to use, maybe it needs to be framed.

  • 10/20/14 - Lacrosse Vines - Life tip: don't fight Andrew Suitor

  • 10/19/14 - In Lacrosse We Trust - 2015 NLL Breakout Players: Brodie MacDonald

  • 10/16/14 - Mike Grimes Thinks the Swarm are East Enough

The Minnesota Swarm signed enough players to field one shift on the floor today as seven players including new defensive star Mike Grimes inked contracts for the 2015 season. In addition to Grimes, the Swarm signed goaltender Brodie MacDonald for two years, re-signed Corbyn Tao, brought back Dominique Alexander after a year on the practice roster, signed one free agent with NLL experience and two rookie free agents trying the pro indoor game for the first time.

  • 10/16/14 - Leroux Makes Opening Day Roster Quad City

Minnesota Swarm 2014 draftee Paxton Leroux looks like he will get paid more this season than any Swarm player. The problem is that he will be playing hockey for the ECHL's Quad City Mallards as the Mallards announced their opening day roster which includes Leroux. So, one will have to wait a while, maybe for ever, to see Leroux in blue and gold.

  • 10/14/14 - MLL.com - #QuickHits: Jordan MacIntosh

  • 10/14/14 - Flint Placed on Hold Out List

It may be a while before we see Cameron Flint in blue and gold in 2015. The Minnesota Swarm placed Flint on the Hold Out list yesterday. The Hold Out list is for a player under contract but can't participate with the team due to an issue off the floor. This is usually work related as every NLL player actually lives check to check. With Flint, who is signed through 2015 and lives in Denver, my hunch is that his work schedule will conflict for a time with the Swarm schedule. When that it is not an issue, the Swarm can definitely activate Flint to the active roster, that is if there is spot available for him at the time.

  • 10/14/14 - Paxton Leroux Trying Out With the Quad City Mallards

Paxton Leroux was drafted by the Minnesota Swarm with the 40th pick overall in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft but Leroux is trying to put off a lacrosse career for the time being. This past Saturday, Leroux signed with the ECHL's Quad City Mallards, a Minnesota Wild affiliate, to try to extend his hockey career just two steps short of the NHL. The Mallards start their first ECHL season on October 24th and their final cut is this Wednesday. So by the end of Wednesday, we will know if Leroux will continue his hockey career or maybe give the Swarm a try this year. Either way, I doubt he will start his fallback job anytime soon.

  • 10/13/14 - Four Sign on Canadian Thanksgiving

Today, Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving. I figure they double dip in November also, but its not against the law. While taking a day of rest, the Swarm signed up four of their 2014 Draft picks all to two-year contracts.

  • 10/13/14 - Grimes will wear #23 and Acton will wear #27

The Minnesota Swarm per their roster page at their site announce that Mike Grimes will wear #23 and Reid Acton will wear #27. To accomodate Grimes, the Swarm reassigned Dominique Alexander to #22 when he signs after finishing last season on the practice roster making him a free agent this offseason.

  • 10/12/14 - Ian Crawford will wear #97

Ian Crawford will wear #97 so says the Minnesota Swarm per their roster page at their site. Ian will be one number off from his brother Callum who wears #98.

  • 10/12/14 - Actual Swarm Jersey Numbers for New Players

The Minnesota Swarm assigned the following numbers to their players on their roster page at their site. I had them all right except Shane MacDonald who I had 44 and Patrick Miles who I had 92:

The following players have not yet had numbers assigned. My guess is Acton (5), Grimes (23) and Crawford (26):

  • 10/10/14 - IL Indoor - 2014 ILIndoor Top 50: Logan Schuss, No. 48

  • 10/10/14 - YouTube - 2015 Minnesota Swarm Fall TV Commercial

  • 10/07/14 -The Swarm Continue Pre-Season Holiday Tradition

For the fourth straight year, the Minnesota Swarm will travel to Rochester to play the Knighthawks in pre-season action at the Blue Cross Arena. The game is on Saturday, December 6th at 7:00 pm. My hunch is that the game will be on YouTube as they have been the past two years. The Swarm and Knighthawks have played each other the last three years in Rochester in pre-season with the Knighthawks holding a 2-1 series lead. Last year, the Swarm finally broke through as Scott Jones scored the game winner with a second left for a Swarm 16-15 victory.

Swarm-Knighthawks Pre-Season Holiday Tradition Series. All games in Rochester because the Swarm are too cheap to host an pre-season game in Minnesota:

Expect the Swarm to also play a pre-season game or two at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre during camp. Also, expect not to see the Swarm in Minnesota until January 3rd for the regular season home opener unless the Swarm Holiday Bowl occurs before that at which time you will get to see maybe five players for a couple hours at the Mall of America.

  • 10/07/14 - Lacrosse All-Stars - Tie Up Tuesday: Corbyn Tao

  • 10/05/14- The Swarm Reportedly Have Sold 2,800 Season Tickets

St. Paul Pioneer Press sports columnist Charley Walters tweeted the following:

Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team has sold about 2,800 season tickets.

Remember, a year ago, Swarm Owner and General Manager John Arlotta wrote a letter to Swarm fans with a goal for 4,000 season ticket holders for 2014. At that time , they had 2,500 and I don't know if they reached 4,000 but I don't think so. If 4,000 is their goal this year, they are 300 ahead of last year's pace.

Hopefully in a few weeks with some cash in my pocket, I can add to that number.

  • 10/02/14 - Projected Swarm Jersey Numbers for New Players

Here are the jersey numbers I am predicting you will see on the following players for the 2015 season. I tend to do pretty decent at my predictions but I know that the Swarm will fool me a few times just for fun:
