Hominuck Shines Again In Swarm 17-14 Victory

Sunday, February 18, 2007
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 9,056

I heard someone say once, “Always make a good first impression”. That someone had to be talking about Minnesota Swarm lefthanded forward Mike Hominuck. Acquired in a trade on February 6th from Portland, Hominuck made his Swarm debut this weekend in a home and home series against the New York Titans. After scoring five goals and an assist Saturday night in the Big Apple, Hominuck thrilled the 9,056 home town fans with two goals and four assists to help lead the Swarm to a 17-14 victory last night against the Titans. Hominuck more than reconfirmed Swarm General Manager Marty O’Neill’s belief that they got the best part of the deal that sent Kelly Hall out west. Also, the offense has been infused with high voltage with the multi-faceted Hominuck.

The Swarm (4-3) set or tied a few team milestones last night:

  • The Swarm now have their longest winning streak in team history at three.
  • The Swarm tied a team record for most goals in a game with seventeen, which also occurred in an 18-17 loss to the Philadelphia Wings on February 20, 2005 at home.
  • The Swarm also scored a record thirteen goals in the first half.
  • The Swarm have their first ever winning record at home in a season in their history at 2-1.
  • The Swarm have won a record tying two games in a row at home.
  • This is the first ever weekend sweep of two games for the Swarm.
  • The Swarm scored a record seven goals to start the game before allowing a goal.

The Swarm, as stated above, started strong and fast with a 7-0. That lead was built on seven different goal scorers, which is par for the course with the Swarm. Doesn’t matter to the team who scores, just as long as they score and score often. The Titans (1-7) scored their first goal with 17 seconds left in first quarter to prevent the quarter shutout.

The Swarm kept up the pressure in the second quarter. They scored four in a row after giving up one, including Kasey Beirnes netting two near the crease to bring the lead up to 11-2. Assistant Captain Michael Kilby finished the scoring with his first of year on a breakaway to give the Swarm a 13-4 halftime lead.

Unfortunately for the Swarm, they couldn’t keep the intensity of the first half up. It got heated early when Kilby took on the Titans Brian Tower in retaliation of a Tower hit on Riley Kemp. Both of big boys battled long and hard but Kilby came out on top with more scoring punches to the face of Tower. However after the fight, the Titans began to slowly chip away at the large lead led by Pat Maddalena who scored three goals in third. By the end of the quarter, the Titans had cut the lead to 6 at 15-9.

More of same occurred in the fourth as the Titans scored four of the first five goals before Ryan Ward stopped the bleeding to make it 17-13.

Hominuck led the Swarm with two goals and four assists. Beirnes (3g 2a), Dean Hill (3g 2a) and Ward (2g 3a) got five points each. Matt Disher got his first victory in goal this year making 37 saves on 51 shots. Mark Miyashita had a fantastic game collecting a team record twenty-three loose balls and dominating on face offs winning 22 of 33. Pat Maddalena (5g 3a) and Ryan Boyle (2g 6a) led the Titans in scoring. The goaltending duo of Matt Vinc and Nick Schroeder saved 34 of 51 shots. The Swarm went 2 of 6 on power plays while killing 5 of 8 Titan power plays. The Swarm won the loose ball battle 81 to 65.

The Swarm moved from sixth to third place in the East after the weekend sweep. They travel to Chicago to play the Shamrox at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, February 24th with game time at 7:30 pm CST. The Swarm will be looking to avenge the home opening loss of 11-10 to the Shamrox on January 13th.
