The Swarm Still Sweep the Wings

Sunday, March 18 2007
St. Paul, Minnesota
Attendance: 7,524

The Minnesota Swarm were supposed to play two games this past weekend against the Philadelphia Wings but due to weather issues that postponed Saturday night’s game in Philadelphia, the Swarm still swept the weekend with a 11-9 victory on Sunday night in front of 7,524 fans at the Xcel Energy Center.

The game on Saturday was cancelled because the inclement weather on the East Coast on Friday caused numerous flight cancellations, lost luggage and created a traveling nightmare which prevented the Swarm (6-4) from being able to get their players to Philadelphia. However, both teams were in St. Paul on Sunday, somewhat intact. The Swarm were missing Dean Hill, their leading goal scorer, and Scott Stewart from the offense; however, Kasey Beirnes scored four goals and Chad Culp had his best game of the year with three goals and two assists to lead the Swarm to the win.

After Ryan Sharp scored the first goal for the Swarm to give them a 1-0 lead, the Wings (4-6) rattled off four straight in the first quarter to put them up 4-1. The Swarm did come back behind two goals from Beirnes and one from Culp which tied the game at four with 41 seconds left in the quarter. The Wings; however, countered with a Sean Greenhalgh goal with nine seconds remaining to give them a 5-4 lead after the first quarter.

Both teams exchanged goals in the second quarter as the Swarm outscored the Wings 3-2 on goals by Ryan Ward, Culp and Mike Hominuck. The tone for the rest of the game may have been set by Swarm Assistant Captain Michael Kilby. Kilby took on Zach Burke with 5:39 left in the quarter in a fight that ended up with Kilby as the victor and the Swarm fired up as they decided to take the game to the Wings. As Swarm Head Coach Duane Jacobs said after the game, he wants the Swarm “Mean and Good” and Kilby started to set that tone for the rest of the game.

With the game tied at seven at half, the Wings Jake Bergey scored only 21 seconds into the third to give the Wings their last lead of the game at 8-7. The Swarm defense then clamped down on the Wings for the rest of the quarter and Nick Patterson saved the remaining seven shots on the quarter. Beirnes got the only goal for the Swarm in the quarter with 4:04 left to tie it at eight.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Swarm as Beirnes scored to get the lead and Ward got the eventual game winner. Culp finished the scoring with 3:45 left in the game and Patterson only let in one Wings goal in the quarter. After the Bergey goal early in the third, Patterson saved fifteen of the remaining sixteen shots on goal and held the Wings scoreless for nearly twenty four minutes in the second half.

The Swarm suffered a huge loss in the game as Mark Miyashita went down mid 1st half with a torn ACL. Miyashita was having his best season of his career which started in 2004. He is fourth in the league in face offs with over 100 attempts winning sixty percent of his draws. He is also fifth in the league in loose balls with 98 and scored three goals and five assists. He was holding his own with Pete Jacobs, who is second in the league in face offs having won 69 % of his draws. He actually outdrew him 4-3 up until his injury. The injury looks to be season ending which means that Andrew Biers and Travis Hill will be taking over the face off duties. Miyashita probably will be put on the injured reserve this week and the Swarm will have an opening on their active roster. That spot could be filled by a trade which has to be completed by the league’s trade deadline on Tuesday, March 20th at 2:00 pm CST. Also, the Swarm may activate one of their three players off the three man practice roster which includes Kyle Ross, Eli Hill and Kyle Jamieson. Jacobs hinted they are looking for some size for that possible roster opening and Ross probably fits the requirement better than the other two.

East Division W-L (Division Record) [vs. Swarm] (Goal Differential)

  1. Rochester Knighthawks 9-2 (6-1) [0-1] (+27)
  2. Buffalo Bandits 7-4 (7-2) [2-0] (+10)
  3. MINNESOTA SWARM 6-4 (5-3) (+6)
  4. PHILADELPHIA WINGS 4-6 (2-4) [0-1] (-1)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  5. Toronto Rock 4-7 (3-4) (-7)
  6. Chicago Shamrox 3-7 (2-6) [1-1] (-19)
  7. New York Titans 2-9 (2-7) [0-2] (-18)

The win keeps the Swarm in third place and gives them a two game lead on the fourth place Wings. This is the Swarm’s fifth win in the division, which is the most in a year in team history. The 6-4 record is the best the Swarm have ever had this late into the season. The game on Saturday in Philadelphia that was postponed will be played on Friday, April 13th at 6:30 pm in Philadelphia. Yes, that is Friday the Thirteenth. The Swarm next game; however, is Friday, March 23rd against the Toronto Rock at 7:00 pm CST at the Xcel Energy Center. The Swarm and Rock completed a trade last week which the Swarm sent forward Jamie Taylor to the Rock for a fourth round pick in the 2008 Entry Draft. To fill the roster spot, the Swarm re-signed forward Rory McDade, who was released by the Swarm earlier in the year. So expect Taylor, who was an original member of the Swarm in 2005, to make a return to Minnesota. The Wings try to regroup on Saturday, March 24th at home against the Chicago Shamrox at 6:30 pm CST.

Beirnes led the Swarm with four goals and Culp had three goals and two assists. Patterson saved 34 of 43 shots while the Wings Matt Roik saved 34 of 45 shots. Bergey led the Wings with four goals and two assists. The Wings won 15 of 24 face offs as Biers went 5 of 17 after the injury to Miyashita. Both teams have four penalties for eleven minutes each and there were no penalties called in either the first or fourth quarter. Also, neither team scored on the power play, both going 0 for 2. The Swarm won the loose ball battle 76 to 73 against a Wings team very proficient at scooping up loose balls.
