Swarm’s Season Ends in Buffalo – Again

Sunday, April 22, 2007
Buffalo, New York
Attendance: 9,003

The Minnesota Swarm are on the cusp of being a great story but as great writers will tell you, there can be times when writer’s block appears. You look at it from every angle, you twist and turn as you attack it but you can’t get past it. The Swarm’s block is the Buffalo Bandits and they couldn’t unlock the block on Sunday, April 22 as their season ended in the first round of playoffs for a second straight year in Buffalo by a score of 14-8. With the win in front of 9,003 orange and black clad fans, the Bandits will go to Rochester to play the Knighthawks for the East Division title on Friday, April 27.

The Swarm started very fast and strong. Chad Culp opened the scoring with a goal at 2:44. The Swarm continued the onslaught with goals from Ryan Ward, Ryan Cousins and Dean Hill to give the team a 4-0 lead at 6:02 on the road. The Bandits responded with a four goal outburst of their own including two goals by Kevin Dostie to tie the game at four by the end of the quarter.

The Swarm responded to start the second quarter with a breakaway goals by Cousins and Kyle Ross. For Ross, that goal was his first ever in the NLL. The Bandits countered again with three straight goals, the last two scored by Dan Teat to give them their first lead at 7-6. Ryan Sharp scored on a breakaway with fifty seconds left to tie it at seven. The Bandits had the ball late with the extra attacker but Jon Sullivan turned the Bandits over and scored on a breakaway with three seconds left as the league’s all-time leading scorer, John Tavares, did his best goalie impersonation to try to keep it out.

The Swarm looked confident starting the second half up 8-7 and had all rights to be as they were up on rival on the road. So what happened the rest of the way never could have been predicted.

Buffalo regained their composure going into the third and clamped down on defense. The Swarm couldn't get off quality shots on Mike Thompson and they harder they tried the more elusive even one goal came. Tavares went back to playing offense and scored three of the Bandits six goals in the second half as the Bandits once again showed their veteran mettle against the upstart Swarm by shutting out them out the entire second half.

Patterson played the entire game this year compared to getting pulled early in last year's game in Buffalo. But no matter how good the goaltending could be, being shut out for an entire half will not win you many games. When Cousins, a defender, is the only player with multiple goals in the game and Sharp leads the team with three points, trouble is brewing and it showed. It also didn't help that Brock Boyle, Andrew Biers, Riley Kemp and Mike Hominuck did not dress due to injury with Biers and Kemp out for the season for sure if they advanced.

Nevertheless, the Swarm had the most successful season ever, their first ever season with an above .500 record. So the future is bright as the Swarm continue to build the roster around their youthful but ever more experienced core.
