December 2013 Updates

November 2013 | Current Month | Other Months | January 2014

  • 12/28/13 - Review - Swarm 6 Knighthawks 8. The Minnesota Swarm lose to to start the season in Rochester by a 8-6. Tyler Hass led the Swarm with two goals and Tyler Carlson saved 26 of 34 shots.

  • 12/27/13 - The National Lacrosse League announced Thursday night that it was suspending Jason Noble for one game. This came by an illegal crosscheck he inflicted on a player from the Calgary Roughnecks on December 14th, 2013 in a pre-season game. Noble's actions also generated a match penalty which triggered the one-game suspension. My hunch is that it was a head shot but that is not confirmed. I presume that Noble has the ability to appeal the suspension which he may already have or will do so. If he plays this Saturday, then Noble is definitely appealing. If he does not play, then one can assume that he is not appealing or may have already lost the appeal. Either way, quite a peculiar start to Noble's NLL career. The Swarm faced a similar situation last year when Andrew Suitor missed the first two games of the season for his actions in a 2012 playoff game against Edmonton and now the Swarm look to be losing another key player due to suspension once again to start the season.

  • 12/26/13 - The Minnesota Swarm sign Zach Palmer and Dominique Alexander on the practice roster just two days before the 2014 season opener in Rochester. The team can still sign another two players if they want to the practice roster. Both Palmer and Alexander were 2013 Swarm draft picks but both were released on the final cutdown on December 16th.

  • 12/24/13 - Preview - Minnesota Swarm at Rochester Knighthawks - December 28th - 6:30 pm Central. The Swarm open the 2014 season in Rochester against the two-time defending Champions Cup winners, the Knighthawks. This will be a rematch of last year's East Division final won by the Knighthawks, 12-10. Like all East Divsion teams, the Swarm play the Knighthawks three times this year.

  • 12/18/13 - Updated Minnesota Swarm Depth Chart after the roster deadline:

    Goaltenders Defense (Left) Defense (Right)
    30-Tyler Carlson 4-Jeff Gilbert 10-Alex Crepinsek
    31-Zach Higgins 8-Greg Downing 11-Mike Hobbins
        15-Jordan Houtby

Transition (Left) Transition (Right) Forwards (Left) Forwards (Right)
    33-David Earl 24-Jordan MacIntosh 18-Logan Schuss 98-Callum Crawford
    3-Brock Sorensen 46-Kiel Matisz 32-Shayne Jackson 89-Scott Jones
    45-Jason Noble 9-Tyler Hass 81-Josh Gillam
      12-Cameron Flint
      20-Andrew Suitor

  • 12/16/13 - The Swarm set their 20 Man Active Roster today. They added veteran NLL player Mike Hobbins, who was recently released by the Toronto Rock. Andrew Suitor was activated to the active roster as he continues his comeback from knee injury. The Swarm also signed 2013 draft pick Reid Acton and placed him on the Hold Out List.

  • 12/14/13 - Pre-Season Review - The Swarm get routed 19-9 by the Calgary Roughnecks to finish the pre-season with a 2-1 record. Roster deadline is Monday, December 16th at 11:00 am Central.

  • 12/13/13 - The Swarm placed Matt Gibson on the Physically Unable to Perform List. Gibson suffered concussion issues this summer playing for the New York Lizards of the MLL and they supposedly have lingered enough to make playing indoors not beneficial to Gibson. Also, Gibson has accepted an assistant coaching position with the UCLA men's club lacrosse team as he lives in Los Angeles.

  • 12/12/13 - Pre-Season Preview - Minnesota Swarm vs Calgary Roughnecks - December 14th - Oakville, Ontario - 12:30 pm Central

  • 12/09/13 - Pre-Season Review - Scott Jones scores with one second left to lead the Swarm to a 16-15 come from behind win against the Knighthawks in Rochester on Saturday Night.

  • 12/07/13 - Pre-Season Review - Swarm win 14-10 over the Mammoth on Friday Night. Jordan MacIntosh scores a hat trick to lead the team to victory.

  • 12/06/13 - Pre-Season Preview - Minnesota Swarm at Rochester Knighthawks - December 7th - Rochester, New York - 7:00 pm Central

  • 12/06/13 - Mitch Belisle has been placed on the protected player list today by the Minnesota Swarm. Belisle is still in the running to represent Team USA at the World Field Lacrosse Championships in Denver in July 2014. The final cutdown is expected in late January when Team USA gets together for training in Florida. If Belisle doesn't make the final cut, he may come back to the Swarm later in the season if the Swarm need him.

  • 12/05/13 - Michael Teeter is still with the team and on the active roster. I mistakenly thought he was released earlier this weekend when the Swarm updated their roster on their website with new jersey numbers and other transactions on the 3rd as Teeter was not listed at that time.

Teeter has been given jersey number 16.

  • 12/03/13 - Pre-Season Preview - Minnesota Swarm v. Colorado Mammoth - December 6th - Oakville, Ontario - 6:00 pm Central

  • 12/03/13 - The Minnesota Swarm have updated their roster page after the first weekend of training camp.

First off, just like Head Coach Joe Sullivan said prior to camp, the team was planning to cut down to 24 after the first weekend. It appears that local product Nicholas Jonas and recent free-agent signee Michael Teeter were released to bring the training camp roster down to 24. It is not yet confirmed but their omission from the Swarm's website roster page is telling.

Also, the Swarm assigned roster numbers to the seven remaining 2013 NLL Entry Draft picks on the active roster:

It does appear that Ryan Masters in actuality did sign a practice contract prior to camp last week. He is still listed on the Swarm's practice roster on their site and his #89 jersey has been assigned to Jones. It looks like Masters may be getting a new jersey number.

With Masters destined to the practice roster, it looks like 23 players are battling for 20 active roster and the 3 remaining practice spots. Based on an ILIndoor.com story coming out the of the first weekend of camp, it appears that Andrew Suitor is on track to be activated by December 16th (roster deadline date). Even though his status for this weekend's pre-season games is unclear publicly, it is safe to assume that Suitor will be one of the final 20. That still leaves three other players battling for a spot on the final 20.
